Perry Rhodan Infotransmitter
September 2004
Welcome to the September 2004 issue of the InfoTransmitter! Among other things, there’s some great news for fans of Atlan.
Meanwhile, I hope those of you who are attending this year’s WorldCon (www.noreascon.org) in Boston are having a great time. Personally I’m looking forward to the “Creation Salute to Star Trek and Sci-Fi Media” convention (www.creationent.com), to be held October 2 and 3 near Philadelphia in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Sadly, James Doohan (“Scotty”), who’s in poor health, has made what’s expected to be his last convention appearance at the end of August at a convention in Los Angeles (and he also just received his Hollywood “Walk of Fame” star). Still, both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are expected to appear in person at the Creation convention.
Speaking of Star Trek, “Trekkies 2” (http://trekkies2.com) has just been released! The first “Trekkies” was a fun yet refreshingly respectful and well-produced documentary on the Star Trek fandom in North America. The sequel now takes a look at the international fandom and includes a report on German fans who are producing their very own Star Trek movie.
So much on the “competition.” Now on to news about Perry Rhodan. Enjoy!| |

 An Editor’s Log Entry
By Sabine Kropp
August 13, 2004 - As I had already announced in my last Log Entry, we held an editorial conference on August 2, 2004, in Rastatt. On that Monday, Atlan head writer Uwe Anton, editor-in-chief Klaus N. Frick, and I met to discuss the new Atlan miniseries that will seamlessly follow the current “Obsidian” storyline. Starting October 22, 2004, there will be 12 new volumes featuring the immortal Atlan.
In a relaxed atmosphere, backdropped by extremely pleasant summer weather, we conferred at length about contents and potential writers and cover artists. A concept has been developed, and the storyline, already expertly developed by Uwe Anton before the meeting, has also been finalized. I can already reveal one secret at this point. The name of the story cycle is “Die Lordrichter” [The Lord Judges]. In my next Log Entry I will say more about the name and what the Lordrichter are about.
None other than storyline developer Uwe Anton will be responsible for the first “Lordrichter” novel (volume 13 of the Atlan booklet novella series). Volumes 14 and 15 will be a double issue written by Michael Marcus Thurner. He has already contributed two novels to Obsidian. Bernhard Kempen, now known at least since his Obsidian novel “Im Zeichen des Kristallmondes” [Under the Sign of the Crystal Moon], will be writing the fourth novel (volume 16). With these authors on board, we can already look forward to some great stories!
And I can also announce another piece of excellent news. As with Obsidian, the first four covers of the miniseries will be designed by Dirk Schulz. This artist has already been doing quite a bit of work for Perry Rhodan, among other things. For example, the 2005 Perry Rhodan calendar has been available since July, which features a selection of the best Dirk Schulz cover paintings. I think it’s great. Anyone who’s interested should certainly get hold of a copy as long as supplies last. Just check your local bookstore!
That’s all for now from the Atlan team. I wish everyone a lot of fun with the next “Atlan: Obsidian” issue, written by Bernd Frenz. His novel “Die Technostadt” [The Techno-City] is to be released on August 13, 2004.

The deadline for the first William Voltz Award has expired
August 20, 2004 - The deadline for submitting short stories for the William Voltz Award expired on Sunday, August 15—and the response exceeded all expectations! Since announcing the award, the Voltz-Mahn family has received 225 entries during the last few weeks. “We certainly had expected a good turnout,” said Ralph Voltz, the son of William Voltz who’s managing the award’s web site. “But we never expected anything like this and are overwhelmed by the number of entries.”
And to such an extent that the organizers have decided to extend the original schedule. “We are extending the voting to October 30 so that every story will have a chance at being evaluated by interested readers. This means that the awards won’t be made at the Frankfurt Book Fair, but having a fair approach is more important to us.”
P.S. Incidentally, due to problems with the site’s ISP, only part of the stories are online—but that should change soon! |

Perry Rhodan founding father greets his fans
August 24, 2004 - “As always, please send my best wishes to all Perry Rhodan readers,” Walter Ernsting, one of the two founding authors of Perry Rhodan, told Klaus N. Frick today, the current editor-in-chief for the series.
Soon after the Second World War, working under the pseudonym “Clark Darlton,” Walter began to introduce German readers to science fiction. In 1955 he started the first German fanzine, and in 1961 he co-founded Perry Rhodan.
Walter wants everyone to know that for now his health is stable. “However, the weather can be a strain,” he admits. “I’m already looking forward to cooler weather and the onset of winter.”

Round two of the Atlan ebook edition!
August 24, 2004 - The release of volume 50, “Baikular—Welt des Terrors” [Baikular—World of Terror], in a few weeks will conclude the first round of the Atlan ebooks. By way of reminder: Published weekly, this edition presents electronic versions of the adventures from the storyline “Im Auftrag der Menschheit” [Under Mankind’s Orders].
And more is yet to come! We’ll be seamlessly continuing the edition starting with volume 51 and completing “Im Auftrag der Menschheit”’s altogether 89 segments (the list of titles can be downloaded here in PDF). You can expect more adventures featuring Atlan and the USO agents Ronald Tekener and Sinclair M. Kennon—imaginative, action-oriented science fiction.
To continue—or enhance—your enjoyment of the ebook edition, we’ve come up with a few things to make it even more appealing.
Effective immediately, Atlan ebooks will be released twice a week—Tuesdays and Fridays—thus meeting a request expressed by many of our subscribers. Oh, and we’re reducing the price. All 89 volumes cost only 76 Euros, that’s just about 85 Cents per volume (or 85.3 Cents, if you want to be picky).
And of course, as always: One purchase, multiple formats. Each novel is provided in the PDF, Palm®-Reader®, HTML and TXT formats. You can download just one of them, or all at once, or on an as-needed basis. You can visit your personal online bookshelf anytime.
Curious? Then check out our sample—or simply click right through to our eBookShop.
P.S. And any newcomers who decide to subscribe both the first and second Atlan ebook sets at the same time will receive a special bonus: veteran writer Hans Kneifel’s Atlan: Time Adventure “Lotse im Sandmeer” [Pilot in the Ocean of Sand] as an ebook! |

 An Editor’s Log Entry
By Klaus N. Frick
August 27, 2004 - Amazing, but true: The hardcover “blue” edition of Perry Rhodan published by the Bertelsmann Book Club—or, more precisely, RM Buch und Medien Vertrieb GmbH—will be cause for celebrating a real milestone this month: Subscribers and other recipients of this book series will be receiving the one hundreth volume!
Titled “Eine Galaxis stirbt” [Death of a Galaxy] and compiled by Hubert Haensel, the book is substantially identical with Perry Rhodan Silver Edition volume 84. In fact, the two editions differ only in their cover design and masthead—and of course also in the fact that the Silver Edition can be obtained through any bookstore while the book club edition can only be ordered through the club by members.
Explaining the reason for the different numbering of the same volume is somewhat difficult, which is why I’ll only make a brief attempt: The club edition also featured the “Plophos” storyline on an exclusive basis, resulting in four Perry Rhodan books that were omitted in the Silver Edition. Moreover, there was also the twelve-volume “Terrania” edition, a selected reprint of Perry Rhodan weekly issues 2000 to 2048. Future generations of fans and science fiction historians are likely to gripe about this approach; it is indeed a bit confusing. Nevertheless, we editors are very happy about this milestone. One hundred volumes in a single book series available only on a subscription basis—that’s an unbelievable success!
Congratulations to all colleagues in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck—which is where the club’s offices are located—plus a big “Thank you!” to all the loyal subscribers of this book edition! |

Audiobooks now also available for downloading!
August 27, 2004 - Eins A Medien company’s Perry Rhodan audiobooks on CD and cassette have long since established themselves as an integral part of the Perryverse—especially with the launch of the “ Silber-Edition” [Silver Edition] that tells the story of Perry Rhodan from the beginning …
Now the audiobooks are also being made available in a downloadable version. Due to a partnership with readersplanet, the first nine audio productions of Perry Rhodan paperbacks are being offered at reasonable prices for downloading in the user-friendly MP3 format—and featuring, of course, Josef Tratnik’s indelible voice as the narrator.
Just stop by for a listen! |
